The non-woven fabric manufacturers in Taiwan are hoping to making investments in India as they see huge potential in the country.

Shelly Chein, chairperson of the Taiwan Fabric Non-woven Industry Association, told The Hindu on Monday, ā€œI am leading our industry to have investments in India. I see so much potential. Every delegate (who is on an eight-day visit to India) felt that way.ā€

Most of the Taiwanese non-woven fabric production companies have factories worldwide. ā€œEight countries have approached us for investments,ā€ she said. ā€œWe see so much potential and opportunities for collaboration,ā€ she added.

About half a dozen Taiwanese companies made a presentation about their products and business at a meeting organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry and the Tamil Nadu government in Coimbatore on Monday. The delegation, led by Ms. Chein, had visited Ahmedabad and New Delhi and will visit Chennai too in a trip facilitated by Invest India.

According to Maheswari Ravikumar, Director of Handlooms, Tamil Nadu, the State has one-third of the country’s textile business and 21 % of textile exports. The State is also strong in sustainable production and ESG compliance. The Taiwan companies are in the non-woven segment for more than 50 years while those in Tamil Nadu are into non-woven only for about a decade. Hence, there is huge scope for collaboration. The Tamil Nadu government has allocated ₹15 crore to promote investments in technical textiles and ₹10 crore to support research in technical textiles, she said.

A presentation made by Guidance Tamil Nadu said the Taiwan companies have technical expertise and market access. A delegation from the State recently visited Australia to explore opportunities for the Indian textile sector and a delegation from Saudi Arabia visited Tamil Nadu.

G.R. Gopikumar, convenor of the CII – TN Textile Panel, said the demand for non-woven fabrics is growing in India because of the growing automobile, hygiene and healthcare sectors.
