The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹1.76 crore to enhance the security at the Special Camp on the premises of the Tiruchi Central Jail that houses foreign nationals at Kottapattu on the outskirts of the city.

The Special Camp, which is being administered by the Revenue Department, is used to house foreign nationals who were facing trial at various courts. The foreigners, who are waiting for clearances from their respective embassies and High Commissions for repatriation, have also been given accommodation in the camp. At present, according to sources, about 170 inmates, belonging to countries such as Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Uganda, Sudan, and the United States were housed there. Most of them are Sri Lankans.

In the recent past, the inmates staged several protests demanding their early release and repatriation. There were instances of ruckuses, with inmates climbing the compound wall, trees, and other structures. It has been a challenge for the authorities to enforce order among the camp’s inmates. As a part of enhancing the security at the camp, the State government has come out with a plan and sanctioned ₹1.76 crore for it.

Tiruchi Collector V. Saravanan told The Hindu construction of a compound wall for a length of 248 metres, electrical fencing, provision of CCTV cameras were among the proposed security infrastructure at the camp. The process of tendering was under way.

The District Rural Development Agency will implement the project, and it will be completed within three months.

The compound wall would be of reinforced concrete structure. Electrical fencing would be erected for three meters on top of the wall, Mr. Saravanan added.
