The five-year Tamilnadu Technical Textiles Mission with an outlay of ₹15 crore took off on Wednesday (November 26, 2025) with a meeting organised by the Department of Textiles in Tiruppur for potential and existing technical textile entrepreneurs.
R. Lalitha, the Mission Director and Director of Textiles, said those who have an idea of the technical textile product they want to manufacture and the market they are targeting can seek guidance from one of the empanelled consultants. The Mission will reimburse ₹50 lakh or 50 % of the consultation fee. There are multiple schemes by the Ministries of MSMEs and Textiles in the State to support investments in technical textiles. One of the reasons for the technical textile sector not taking off in the State is lack of knowledge about it. While the State is a leader in the spinning and knitwear sectors, the western States manufacture a wide range of technical textiles products.
Trade facilitation portal
The Tamil Nadu government plans to conduct a technical textile expo in Coimbatore once in two years from next year and will soon launch a trade facilitation portal to link the manufacturers and buyers. It sends delegations to various hubs and markets almost every month.
The Department will give subsidy to three or four companies soon for taking up research and development in technical textiles.
Addressing nearly 110 participants at the meeting in Tiruppur, she added that textile companies need to get into value addition and technical textiles. Similar sessions will be held in Karur, Salem, Madurai and Chennai. The Department plans to facilitate setting up of minimum 24 industrial units in technical textiles with an investment outlay of ₹480 crore in five years.
