The Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently-abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC) staged a protest at the Collectorate here on Tuesday demanding hike in the disability assistance for the differently-abed.

The association, highlighting the needs of the differently-abled and their requirements that needed State support, pointed out that the paltry assistance of the Tamil Nadu government barely sufficed.

According to TARATDAC, in Andhra Pradesh, the assistance is ₹6,000 per month to persons with disability; ₹10,000 per month to persons with severe disability; and ₹15,000 per month to persons with severe disability with the need for heightened support. The disability assistance in Puducherry was between ₹3,000 to ₹4,800; it is ₹3,500 in Haryana and ₹4,016 in Telangana.

The protesters alleged that the assistance was the lowest in Tamil Nadu, with ₹1,500 for persons with less than 75% disability and ₹2,000 for those above 75% disabilities.

According to TARATDAC, Tamil Nadu ranked second only to Maharashtra in the growth index, while Andhra Pradesh stood 9th in the economic growth index. However, Andhra Pradesh’s financial assistance for the differently abled was far higher in comparison to Tamil Nadu. The protesters demanded that the government hike the assistance immediately.
