The district School Education Department on Friday suspended a teacher of the Panchayat Union Middle School at Elachipalayam near Karumathampatti in Coimbatore for caning a Class II girl.

The Karumathampatti police registered a case against the teacher, Periyanayagi, for beating the student, Shashini (7), on the lower part of her left arm with a stick on November 7.

The child’s mother, Parimala (34), noticed swelling and bruising when the girl returned home. The teacher promised to cover the girl’s medical expenses, and the child was admitted to a private hospital in Avinashi on November 13. The teacher reportedly paid the medical bill of ₹41,000. Continued pain led to the girl’s admission to Coimbatore Government Medical College Hospital on November 21. Following the mother’s complaint, the police registered a case on Wednesday.

District Educational Officer (Primary) P. Ravichandran held an inquiry with the teacher on Wednesday. Following the inquiry, she was suspended, and the order was issued on Friday.
