Days after 19 people were killed after a lorry carrying gravel crashed into a bus of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, officers of the Road Transport Authority intensified checks on overloaded goods vehicles across Telangana.

According to official data, at least three lorries carrying sand, bricks, and metal were seized during the inspections, on Wednesday and relevant cases were booked. The vehicles were allegedly found transporting 5.6 tonnes of sand, 7.5 tonnes of bricks, and 4.2 tonnes of metal respectively, which officials said exceeded permissible limits.

The crackdown follows the gruesome collision earlier this week between a gravel-laden lorry and a TGSRTC bus near Chevella. Authorities have since stepped up monitoring of heavy vehicles, particularly those carrying construction materials, to prevent similar road accidents.

Transport department officials said checks would continue across districts to identify and penalise violators. “Strict action will be taken against those responsible for overloading, which endangers both the drivers and the public,” a senior official said.
