Ten people were injured in a road accident at Arichalmunai in Dhanushkodi near here on Friday.

Police said Rampravesh, 55, of Chhattisgarh had gone to Dhanushkodi with eight of his family members in a tourist van after offering worship at Sri Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram.

When they were returning from Arichalmunai towards Rameswaram, their van collided head-on with another van which was proceeding in the opposite direction.

The van driver, Dakshinamurthy, 42, of Rameswaram, who sustained serious injuries in his legs and head, was taken to Government Ramanathapuram Medical College Hospital, and nine others were admitted to Rameswaram Government Hospital for treatment.

The injured included Rampravesh, Sukhdev Singha, Neelamani Sahu and Mahadev — all North Indian tourists.

Dhanushkodi Police have registered a case and an investigation is under way.
