The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has called for tenders for an interim expansion of the Coimbatore International Airport at an estimated cost of ₹10.92 crore.
As per the tender document, bids are called for expansion and construction of additional security hold area (SHA) in the existing terminal building at the airport. The works have to be completed in six months.

The scope of the work is to provide additional seating and amenities in the existing SHA, besides the expansion and construction of an additional SHA area within the existing terminal building. The proposed additional area includes an arrival corridor at the first floor-level for passengers arriving from aerobridges. The existing SHA will have to be extended for about 920 sqm at the first floor-level for this corridor and other facilities.
As per the tender document, civil works proposed include steel deck floor, steel columns with precast footings over the existing baggage claim area, flooring, roofing, wall partitions, wash rooms, food and beverages (F&B) outlets, interior finishes and seamless integration within the existing terminal building, along with provision of adequate seating.
Works proposed include modification/relocation of boarding gates and arrival gates as per requirements, incorporation of the existing staircase and escalator connecting the arrival hall to the domestic SHA at ground floor, provision of retail and F&B spaces without affecting passenger flow, infrastructure for advertisements, media installations and artwork at suitable locations.
Provision of toilets for gents, ladies and differently-abled persons, baby care rooms and drinking water facilities; new staircase, escalator and elevator for the arrival passengers; and standard facilities for passengers with reduced mobility, visually-challenged and persons with hearing impairment as per the Accessibility Standards and Guidelines for Civil Aviation are other facilities proposed.
The works have to be carried out ensuring the structural stability of the existing terminal during construction.

Industrialists and organisations such as Kongu Global Forum and Coimbatore NXT (an initiative of CII) have been mooting for an interim expansion of the airport as the passenger footfall crossed 30 lakh in 2024 as against the capacity of 20 lakh passengers. According to KGF, the air passenger traffic is projected to cross 35 lakh in 2025.
In July, a delegation of industrialists from Coimbatore and Tiruppur and Coimbatore south MLA Vanathi Srinivasan met Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Ram Mohan Naidu in New Delhi and sought for an interim project of ₹100 crore to ₹120 crore to manage the growing passenger traffic. Coimbatore MP Ganapathi P. Rajkumar had also demanded for an interim project in the Lok Sabha.
“Coimbatore NXT took up the demand from May 2025 for an interim expansion of the airport as the existing infrastructure is congested and an obstacle to get new flights. The Civil Aviation Minister, Civil Aviation Secretary and Chairman of AAI, who had assured speedy action on Coimbatore airport expansion, have given us this immediate relief that can manage the airport’s growth for the next three years, until the new integrated terminal building comes to use,” said Shyam Mohan Prabhu, aviation analyst part of Coimbatore NXT.
