The Southern Railway has initiated a significant infrastructure upgrade across the Kollam and Alappuzha districts, marked by two major tenders aimed at comprehensive redevelopment and modernisation of some key stations. The Sasthamkotta railway station in Kollam is the focus of one such project, with the railway issuing tenders worth ₹6.46 crore. This project, undertaken to address a long-standing need for improved facilities, will be implemented under the Thiruvananthapuram division, as confirmed by Kodikkunnil Suresh, MP.

The extensive scope of work at Sasthamkotta includes the development of platform 1 and 2, the installation of coach indication boards (₹1.70 crore), construction of retaining walls and a compound wall (₹3.66 crore), and improvement of the approach road and circulating area (₹8.25 lakh). Specific funds have also been allocated for new stainless steel drinking water basins, station painting, and standard IRS type shelters. The entire Sasthamkotta project is slated for completion within 18 months and is expected to significantly enhance the daily commuting experience in the region.

Simultaneously, a tender worth ₹8.16 crore has been announced for the infrastructure development of other important stations, including Karunagappally in Kollam, and Haripad and Punnapra in Alappuzha. According to K.C. Venugopal, MP, this tender was issued following a detailed estimate prepared by the authorities. The renovation activities at these stations will be comprehensive, focusing on improving the travel experience through better facilities.

Key works include increasing the platform height followed by concreting and tiling, extending platform shelters, and creating specialised facilities for persons with disabilities. General passenger amenities will be greatly enhanced with the construction of new toilets, waiting rooms, and seating, along with the provision of drinking water facilities. Furthermore, the project covers the renovation of station buildings, expansion and modernisation of the circulating area, construction of parking areas and approach roads, and essential electrification work to improve lighting.
