The Thanjavur Corporation has allocated ₹6.68 crore for relaying a link road connecting the Thanjavur-Kumbakonam-Chennai Highway with the Outer Ring Road to the east of Thanjavur at Sukkanthidal area.

According to Mayor S. Ramanathan, the State government has allocated ₹6.50 crore for relaying the 925-metre stretch with a width of 30 feet along the southern side of the waterway passing through the Sukkanthidal area. Another ₹18 lakh had been allocated for the installation of 40 street lights along this stretch.

It has been decided to construct retaining walls on both sides of the carriageway as the nature of the soil caused potholes and craters on this stretch, the Mayor added.

Meanwhile, road users, particularly those using this stretch to commute between their residences in Thanjavur to their workplaces on the Thanjavur-Papanasam-Kumbakonam road, expect this stretch to be upgraded as a perfect two-lane road so that the two-wheeler users could easily negotiate this carriageway.

At present, they were finding it difficult to negotiate this stretch whenever a heavy vehicle comes in the opposite direction. Though only a few heavy vehicles use this link road, skipping the congested Palliaghraharam Market area, the authorities anticipate a surge in the heavy vehicle traffic pm this stretch once it is relaid with retaining walls.

It also serves as an alternative route for a majority of the road users heading towards the Kumbakonam, including the State Transport Corporation buses, whenever traffic regulations are imposed at Palliaghraharam Market area.
