“If anything relieved Indians from the various social evils, it is the Constitution. All of us need to be eternally indebted to it for liberating us from centuries of systematic oppression,” retired teacher B.S. Nadkarni said in Belagavi on Wednesday.
He was delivering a special lecture to mark Constitution Day.
“Due to the Constitution, the oppressed people are living a respectable life in society. That is one of the reasons why the protection and preservation of the Constitution is the responsibility of all of us. For example, the Constitution states that it is the responsibility of the government to help develop a scientific attitude. However, we should all work with the government in realising such dreams,” he said.
“Since the Constitution came into force, women in our country are being protected from evil practices like Sati Sahagamana and eternal widowhood. The Constitution has given wide ranging rights to citizens, especially women. One is universal adult franchise and the other are legally enforceable rights of matrimony. Such rights did not exist earlier. We were a society ruled by Manusmruti. Some people oppose the text and don’t read it. I, however, say that everyone should read Manusmruti, because only when you learn about the evil practices against women documented in that text, you will understand what powerful rights our Constitution has given to women. It is due to such rights that girls are now achieving great success in all fields,” he said.
Regional Commissioner Janaki K.M. flagged off a Constitution Awareness Jatha.
Joint Director of Social Welfare Ramanagara Gowda Kannolli, Deputy Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation Udayakumar Talawar, Deputy Director of Backward Classes Welfare Harsha, Deputy Director of Scheduled Classes Welfare Basavaraj Kurihuli, District Disabled Welfare Officer Namdev Bilkar, community leader Mallesh Chougale and other dignitaries were present.
