The Hindu In School Rising Stars – Celebrating Namma Tiruppur, presented by Tiruppur Corporation with the backing of Tiruppur Exporters’ Association (TEA) elicited overwhelming response on Saturday.
Envisioning celebration of the rich culture, heritage and promising future of Tiruppur, the very first event to take place at the new spanky and spacious town hall building of the Corporation on Kumaran Road encompassed painting contest and quiz competition that drew several hundreds of students.
There were over 1,250 entries for the painting contest under two categories: classes 4 to 6 and 7 to 9.
For the quiz competition for students of classes 9 to 12 , there were 210 teams of two students each taking part in the written round of the quiz competition. There was spontaneity from the students while answering the questions posed by Quiz Master V.V. Ramanan.
Two best-performing teams from the 21 participating teams from Corporation and Government schools received consolation prizes.
Buoyed by the response, both Mayor N. Dinesh Kumar and Corporation Commissioner M.P. Amith expressed their keenness to make the event an annual feature.
Recalling his participation in The Hindu Quiz Competition at Kozhikode as a school student in 2006 and winning a prize in 2007, the Corporation Commissioner described the event as an inspiration to build competitive spirit.
The Mayor referred to the paintings on the theme ‘Tiruppur 2035’ that had a focus on environmental sustainability and acknowledged the challenges the civic body was facing in solid waste management. The Corporation was looking forward to resolving the issue in three months time, he said.
Unveiling the specifics of the Coffee Table Book by The Hindu that TEA intends to bring out along with the Corporation, association president K.M. Subramanian said the uniqueness of the cluster-based model of textile industries would be highlighted through the book in two months time to reach out to the public with the outcome of green initiatives.
Honouring the prize-winners along with the Mayor and the Commissioner, Mr. Subramanian said the Tamil version of the Coffee Table Book will be brought out subsequently.
