Thiagarajar School of Management (TSM) marked a significant step toward environmental consciousness with the inauguration of its Green Club here on Thursday.
T. Badri Narayanan, Head of Medical Services, Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Madurai, delivered the keynote address on the theme ‘Birds and Development’.
He emphasised the deep connection between human well-being, environmental health, and biodiversity. Drawing from his three decades of experience as a passionate bird watcher, he delivered a visually engaging and insightful talk, explaining how birds serve as indicators of ecological balance, drivers of natural pest control, and sentinels of environmental degradation.
He explained that bird populations reflect changes in water quality, air purity, and land health—making them a natural tool for environmental monitoring. In a compelling segment, Dr Badri warned about the environmental impacts of chemicals like DDT, pesticides, and untreated greywater, which disrupt reproduction and increase toxic loads in bird habitats.
Dr. Badri further touched upon broader themes of human development, sustainability, and personal well-being, stressing the relevance of outdoor activities for improving mental health, focus, and emotional balance—especially in today’s digitally driven world.
He emphasized a powerful principle: ‘Live and let live—let them live too,’ reminding students that true progress can only be achieved through coexistence and respect for all life forms.
The Green Club inauguration concluded with a call to students to participate actively in ecological initiatives, campus bird surveys, and sustainability awareness drives. Faculty members appreciated the initiative, expressing confidence that the club would foster a generation of environmentally responsible managers.
