B. Manikandan, named as the third accused in the sensational actor rape case, attempted suicide on Friday night, after he was taken into custody and let off by the Palarivattom police for allegedly causing public nuisance under the influence of alcohol.
Police sources said Mr. Manikandan left the police station around midnight and bought a razor blade from a shop nearby. He slit his wrist even as passersby and the police intervened and rushed him to a hospital. He was discharged after receiving first aid as the injury was found to be minor.
The incident occurred even as the Ernakulam District Sessions Court is set to pronounce the verdict in the case, in which actor Dileep is an accused, on December 8.
The prosecution case is that the actor was abducted and raped by the accused in a moving car on February 17, 2017.
N.S. Sunil, alias Pulsar Suni, is the first accused in the case. The eight other accused in the case include Martin Antony, B. Manikandan, V.P. Vijeesh, H. Salim, Pradeep, Charly Thomas, and Sanilkumar. Dileep, the eighth accused in the case, has been charged with the offence of conspiracy.
