Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Wednesday asked officials to conduct third-party audits of every road accident reported in the State to precisely identify whether the cause lies in vehicle defects, negligence of driver, or road engineering faults.

Chairing the Road Safety Council meeting at the Secretariat, Mr. Naidu said that such detailed audits were essential to reduce the number of accidents and fatalities.

Reviewing the statistics, the Chief Minister said 15,462 road accidents have been reported this year so far, claiming 6,433 lives, placing Andhra Pradesh in the 8th position among States in India in accident-related deaths.

Calling the situation alarming, he stressed the urgent need for strict enforcement of road safety protocols and speed regulations.

Mr. Naidu directed that speed governors be made mandatory in all transport vehicles, saying that the government is considering extending the rule to non-transport vehicles as well.

He instructed the officials to install CCTV cameras every 500 metres on national and State highways, integrated with RTGS, along with the establishment of a dedicated vehicle-tracking control room.

“Despite repeated warnings, if vehicles overspeed, they will be seized,” he warned, giving departments three months to implement speed-control measures.

The officials informed the Chief Minister that 79% of the total accidents were caused by overspeeding, 3% due to wrong-side driving, and 1% each owing to alcohol and mobile phone usage, while 53% of casualties involved self-accidents by two-wheelers and cars. They said that 134 illegally modified all-India tourist buses have been seized.

Mr. Naidu ordered the correction of 680 accident-prone black spots, the installation of crash barriers, improvement of pedestrian facilities, and road markings.

He insisted on action against illegal vehicle alterations, especially unauthorised sleeper bus conversions. He directed the integration of 108 and highway ambulance services for faster medical response and encouraged support for Good Samaritans aiding accident victims.

Road Safety Day

The Chief Minister announced that the third Sunday of November will be observed as Road Safety Day and called for widespread awareness campaigns with the participation from celebrities and public representatives.

Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy, DGP Harish Kumar Gupta, and senior officials from multiple departments attended the meeting.
