Several members of Hindu Munnani were arrested at various places in the central region on Sunday after they assembled to stage demonstrations condemning the DMK government for not obeying the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court order to light the ‘Karthigai deepam’ at the ‘Deepathoon’ atop the hill at Thirupparankundram in Madurai.

A posse of police personnel was deployed at the places where the Hindu Munnani members had decided to carry out the demonstrations following a State-wide call given by the organisation.  In Tiruchi city, over 100 Hindu Munnani members were arrested near the MGR statue in Marakkadai in Gandhi Market police station limits when they assembled there to stage the demonstration. The demonstrators were led by the organisation’s district executive committee member Manojkumar.

In Pudukottai district, the Hindu Munnani members were arrested at three places: Pudukottai Town, Viralimalai and Karambakudi. Police sources said about 40 members of the organisation were arrested in Pudukottai; around 80 members at Viralimalai and about 70 members in Karambakudi.

In neighbouring Ariyalur district, around 110 members of the Hindu Munnani were arrested at Anna statue in Ariyalur town. The arrest of the organisation’s members in Nagapattinam district were made at Nagapattinam town and at Vedaranyam, said police sources.
