The acquittal of actor Dileep by the Ernakulam District and Sessions Court in the actor rape case is not final, former Director General of Police B. Sandhya, who had overseen the investigation, has said.
Ms. Sandhya told The Hindu that the sessions court verdict was not final. The prosecution could go in appeal against the verdict in the two higher courts for justice. Sufficient evidence had been submitted. If it had not been appreciated, the higher courts could be approached.
There was no doubt that the investigation team had done a sincere job in collecting evidence. The police, she said, had no need to do a dishonest job. However, proving criminal conspiracy was always a challenging job.
The prosecution, she said, faced a lot of hurdles during the trial in the case. Prosecutors were also changed multiple times.
Asked about former State Police Chief T.P. Senkumar’s social media post that Dileep was arraigned as an accused without any proper evidence against him, Ms. Sandhya said she did not want to react to anyone’s remarks, especially those who did not have a role in the case.
As a professional officer, it was her job to see if she had guided her team, had they done the work honestly, and if the evidence collected was adequate. In 35 years in the police, she had investigated many cases. Convictions had been got in some cases. In some, the court did not “appreciate” the evidence owing to many factors. Such instances should be dealt with professionally and with diligence. “We should make sure we did our job till the end.”
Earlier, she told mediapersons that she hoped the case had also brought about many positive changes in the film industry.
