Thoothukudi district administration issues advisory to farmers after crop submergence

Thoothukudi district administration has issued an advisory to farmers to protect their crops that were submerged during the recent heavy rainfall caused by cyclone “Ditwah.”

According to an initial report 92 acres of paddy cultivated during the samba season and 104 acres of agricultural lands under other crops have been submerged due to the rainfall in Thoothukudi district, stated the press release.

It further noted that as per the instruction of Chief Minister M. K. Stalin, flood monitoring teams have been formed in the district and block levels to monitor the damage caused to the agricultural lands. Agriculture department officials in coordination with the revenue department, will inspect the damage and appropriate measures will be taken to issue relief funds for the agricultural fields exceeding 33% of damage.

Farmers have been advised to drain the excess water accumulated around the cultivated crops and to refrain from applying fertilizers, pesticides and weedicide for the crops, during this period.

With the northeast monsoon expected to continue till December end, farmers are urged to regularly report crop damage to block-level agricultural officers, obtain appropriate guidance and take necessary crop protection measures.
