Thousands of devotees thronged the Sri Kanaka Mahalakshmi temple at Burujupeta in One Town from late Wednesday night to offer prayers on the first Thursday of the auspicious ‘Margasira Masotsavam’.
Devasthanam authorities organised the first pooja at 12:01 a.m., accompanied by special rituals performed by the priests. Visakhapatnam South MLA Vamsikrishna Srinivas and executive officer K. Shobha Rani were among the first to have darshan.
Long queues formed as early as 11 p.m., with large numbers of women carrying ‘kalasams’ to perform abhishekam, to the main deity. Many devotees travelled from neighbouring districts, and several visitors from Odisha were also seen in the morning.
The authorities distributed buttermilk, biscuit packets and other essentials to those waiting in queue lines, which stretched across the main road in One Town.
A heavy police presence was deployed for crowd management, especially along the queue lines. Crime teams and huge traffic personnel were stationed between Lepakshi Circle near Jagadamba Junction to Burujupeta. Special buses were arranged to facilitate the travel of devotees from various parts of the city, and most were packed with devotees heading to the temple.
Temple Executive Officer K. Shoba Rani said that steps have been put in place to ensure the queue lines move seamless and devotees do not face any inconvenience. She added that ‘Annadanam’ was organised for more than 5,000 devotees on Thursday.
The EO further added that in view of the rush, VIP darshans were limited from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m., and 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
