Three persons were arrested for allegedly robbing a senior citizen of ₹3.5 lakh in Swaroop Nagar area of outer north Delhi, the police said on Monday.

The complainant had withdrawn money from an SBI branch in Burari on November 27. Five persons discreetly followed him from the bank on two motorcycles. At a secluded stretch near the Bawana-Narela belt, they intercepted, surrounded and ‘violently’ robbed the elderly man, the police said.

The suspects Karan (21), Sachin (22), and Akash (24), were arrested by the police. During interrogation, they disclosed that the robbery was meticulously planned and executed with two other accomplices, Lovely (the alleged mastermind) and Mohan alias Gandhi. “Efforts are on to apprehend the two absconding accused,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer North) Hareshwar Swami.

The police said the group acted in a planned and meticulous manner, and were “highly coordinated”, revealing a pattern on choosing their targets. The police said the suspects assembled after a call from Lovely, proposing a major robbery for quick money. The accused posed as customers inside the bank to identify a suitable target. After identifying the victim, two of the suspects followed him to confirm the withdrawal amount. The group then tailed him and waited for a less-crowd location to execute the robbery.

Police have recovered stolen cash worth ₹58,000 and one vehicle used in the crime. “Further investigation is on,” they said.
