The Triplicane police have arrested three men for allegedly abducting a financier and torturing him following a dispute among them after he sold a car that was pledged with him.
The police said S. Selvakannan, 53, of Nungambakkam, runs a finance office from his home. Saravanan alias ‘Linga’ Saravanan, about four months ago, left his car with Selvakannan as collateral in exchange for ₹2 lakh in cash. Selvakannan borrowed money from his friend Benny and paid ₹2 lakh to Saravanan.
Since interest payments were not made for the past three months, Selvakannan sold the pledged the car to another person without informing the original owner.
On learning that his car had been sold, Saravanan filed a complaint against Selvakannan at the Triplicane police station. Selvakannan was summoned to the station on Saturday afternoon. Afterwards, Saravanan lured Selvakannan to a bar, saying the matter could be settled peacefully.
From there, Saravanan and his associates abducted Selvakannan in a car and drove him to Ayodhiyakuppam, the police said. They threatened to release him only if ₹5 lakh was paid, used abusive language, and attacked him with a knife. When Selvakannan raised an alarm, passersby gathered, after which Saravanan and his associates fled in the car.
Following Selvakannan’s complaint with the Triplicane police, a case was registered.
On investigation, the police arrested three suspects involved in the crime: Saravanan alias ‘Linga’ Saravanan, 33, and his associates Sivanandam, 45, from Nanganallur, and Murali, 39, from Pozhichalur.
