The long pending need for bifurcating police stations with vast jurisdictions has got louder in the wake of the arrest of three sexual offenders in an incident that took place here on Sunday night.

The city police, which had 15 police stations, saw some improvement subsequent to the car bomb blast of 2022 near Kottai Eswaran Temple with the opening of three new police stations, bifurcating police stations with vast jurisdictions. Thus came the three police stations at Karumbukkadai and Sundapuram trifurcating the Ukkadam and Podanur police stations and a new police station at Kavundampalayam bifurcating areas from Sai Baba Colony.

The city police annexed Vadavalli and Thudialur police stations from the Rural Police and attached it with the City Police.

Then, a proposal was sent by the Coimbatore City Police Commissionerate through the Office of the DGP to the government seeking to establish police stations for Marudhamalai, bifurcating Vadavalli, considering the flow of devotees to Marudhamalai and the presence of Bharathiar University, Anna University and the resultant mushrooming residential localities.

The other two stations were Irugur and Kalapatti, bifurcating the jurisdictions presently attached to the Singanallur and Peelamedu police stations. These stations were considered essential with burgeoning residential localities in these two police station limits.

The pointing finger is at the police now for the lack of effective patrolling which led to the sexual assault incident in Peelamedu police limits, pointed out N. Logu of Coimbatore Consumer Voice.

When contacted, City Police Commissioner A. Saravana Sundar said that the proposal is under active consideration of the government and manpower required for these new stations has been reiterated. He expressed the hope that orders for setting up the new police stations would come at any time.
