A tiger scare has resurfaced at Kalikavu, reviving the fear and anxiety that had gripped the area after a rubber tapping worker was killed in a tiger attack in May.

Residents are living on edge after a goat was killed and dragged away two days ago by an animal suspected to be a tiger. The goat was slain around the area where 44-year-old rubber tapping employee Gafoor Ali was mauled to death by a tiger on May 15.

Residents appear to be convinced that a tiger is roaming nearby. Some of them said they heard the animal growl. The dense undergrowth in the rubber plantations is seen as a perfect hideout for the tiger and other wildlife.

After Gafoor Ali’s death sparked public outrage, the Forest department finally captured the tiger. The animal was trapped in a cage after a nearly two-month search led by Chief Forest Veterinary Surgeon Arun  Zachariah.
