Tiruchi Corporation is set to launch a special drive to seize stray pigs roaming in public places across the city, following repeated complaints from residents.

The increasing population of stray pigs in several residential areas, particularly in peripheral zones, has become a significant concern for public health and sanitation. Herds of pigs rummaging through waste have become a common sight at Piratiyur, K.K. Nagar, Shanmuga Nagar, Vayalur Road, Milaguparai, Khajapettai, Edamalaipattipudur, Panjapur, Ariyamangalam, and Fort Station areas.

Residents said the animals are frequently spotted near vacant plots, garbage dumps, and roadsides, posing health risks, especially during the monsoon season. “Garbage on empty plots attract stray animals and act as breeding grounds for infections. The authorities should take steps to continuously clear waste to prevent accumulation,” said Vijayakumar, a city resident.

Residents stressed on the need for strict enforcement of rules, stating that pigs were potential carriers of diseases. They said the Corporation must form a dedicated team to round up these animals and impose fines on those who breed them illegally.

The civic body had begun identifying locations where the menace was high. A Chengalpattu-based NGO had been roped in to catch pigs that were roaming in neighbourhoods. A team of 10 workers and vehicles will be deployed for the task. Officials said police support would be sought to ensure the smooth conduct of the drive. The seized animals will be relocated to forest areas outside the city limits. The drive is expected to commence in a few days, a senior health official said.

Action on vacant plots

Meanwhile, action has begun against property owners who allow garbage accumulation on their vacant land.

So far, notices have been issued to 182 owners, directing them to clear and maintain their plots. Non-compliance will attract penalties, officials warned.
