In the wake of widespread waterlogging caused by recent heavy rains, the Tiruchi Corporation has planned to construct new storm-water drains and revamp faulty ones in low-lying areas across the city.
Several key areas, including Thillai Nagar, Woraiyur, Kattur, Old Palpannai, Ariyamangalam, Tiruveumbur, and Cantonment, witnessed severe inundation following the downpour in the past weeks. A preliminary survey has been carried out to identify critical stretches requiring immediate attention. The project will be taken up in phases, prioritising flood-prone roads.
As part of the initiative, the civic body has proposed to redevelop drains along a 1.2-km stretch on Thillai Nagar Main Road at an estimated cost of ₹39 lakh. Permanent slabs will be installed for every 10 feet, followed by removable slabs for the next five feet to facilitate easy removal of silt and clogs.
New storm-water drains and pedestrian platforms are planned along a 1.8-km stretch of Wireless Road, which was recently widened into a 65-foot road with a centre median. The area experienced severe waterlogging during the recent rainfall. Similarly, new drains are proposed along K.K. Nagar Main Road, from Periyar Arch to LIC Colony, at a cost of ₹1 crore, considering the importance of the stretch.
To address recurring inundation, a flood-mitigation project covering Ward Nos. 55, 56, 57, 58, and 60 has been drawn up at a cost of ₹72 crore. The plan includes the construction of 8.5 km of new storm-water drains, widening of existing channels, and installation of silt catch pits to prevent water stagnation during the monsoon.
In addition, new drains are to be constructed in low-lying areas of Balaji Nagar in Ward 39, and along Jinnah Street, Kamaraj Street, G.T. Street, Kumari Anandham Street, and adjoining lanes in Ward 38, at a cost of ₹25.50 lakh. A storm-water drain and a small bridge are planned for Thiru Vi. Ka. Street in Ward 64 at a cost of ₹34.90 lakh.
A senior Corporation official said that storm-water drain projects along major stretches and in low-lying areas would be given priority. The low-lying areas are being closely monitored, and immediate measures would be taken to prevent water stagnation during rainfall, he added.
