In a bid to streamline parking and ease traffic congestion, the Tiruchi Corporation has planned to introduce an integrated digital parking system at the multi-level car parking facility on West Boulevard.

Established at a cost of ₹20 crore to accommodate around 350 four-wheelers and 150 two-wheelers, the facility has remained underutilised, with less than half of its capacity being used. To address this, the Corporation has engaged an agency to manage the parking lot more efficiently. Since commuters have complained about discrepancies in parking fee collection, a digital parking model has been planned.

The new system will feature Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras, which will automatically identify and record vehicle numbers, enabling faster entry and exit while reducing manual intervention. The technology is expected to improve parking management, monitor violations, and enhance overall efficiency. Digital payments will also be accepted, connecting the existing parking infrastructure to a centralised digital platform.

“The integrated system will ensure better revenue management for the civic body. By combining digital payment and monitoring systems, we expect to eliminate manual errors and improve the user experience,” said Corporation Commissioner L. Madhubalan.

The software for the system is currently under development, and a trial run will be conducted once it is completed. The pilot phase is slated to begin at the West Boulevard multi-level parking lot, with plans to gradually expand the model to other locations based on its performance.

Meanwhile, the civic body has urged the Traffic Police to divert two-wheelers and four-wheeler parking on the nearby roads to use the parking facility. Security personnel will also be deployed to ensure smooth traffic flow, an official said.
