The shandy at Ponmalai requires proper infrastructure.

The shandy at Ponmalai requires proper infrastructure.

Ponmalai shandy

The Ponmalai shandy is in a poor condition. In 2027, the railway workshop and the shandy are going to celebrate the centenary year. Before that concrete floor and permanent buildings should be provided for the shandy. There is no two-wheeler/four-wheeler parking lot. There is no toilet and drinking water facility. The Railways has floated a contract to collect money from the shop keepers. Moreover, the entry fee is also being collected by the contractor from all vehicles bringing the commodities to the shandy. Request the Divisional Railway Manager to provide necessary infrastructure and amenities at he shandy before 2027.

Operate train

The Railway Board should operate a Vande Bharat train originating from Tiruchi. The train can be operated to Chennai departing Tiruchi at 8 a.m. From Chennai, the train can leave at 2 p.m. This will benefit passengers from Tiruchi. As of now only the Rockfort express originates from Tiruchi. Tiruchi residents are
not able to board the unreserved compartments and get only limited seats in reserved compartments.

Entry in EB cards

The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Ltd’s staff who records the power consumption readings of consumers do not make entries in cards and instead ask us to check online or through App and pay the power charges. Consumers cannot be compelled to adopt. The Corporation should obligate that the entries are made manually in the EB cards.

Health card a boon

The PMJAY Ayushman Bharat Health Card introduced by the Government of India is a boon to the senior citizens, who can get treatment in designated hospitals free of cost. But there are instances of some hospitals are reluctant to pass on the benefit to patients under one pretext or the other. This despite the fact that an exclusive number (14555) has been allocated to lodge complaints, if any. All empanelled hospitals must be instructed to display prominently the features of the scheme in a board to enable beneficiaries to get to know and make use of this.

Repair road

The road at the entrance of Ponmalai is full of potholes and poses a risk to road users, especially two wheeler riders. I request the authorities to take immediate action.

Parking on bridge

The practice of four-wheelers being parked on the Cauvery bridge in Tiruchi by people who stop to spend time with friends and family has become a serious safety concern. The bridge is a vital traffic corridor, and such indiscriminate parking reduces the motorable width, distracts drivers, and increases the risk of accidents for vehicles passing through. A stricter fine system must be enforced to deter this behaviour. Installing automatic sensors or alert systems would help authorities identify and act immediately on illegally parked vehicles. These measures will not only ensure smoother traffic flow but also safeguard thousands of commuters who use the bridge every day. Strong enforcement and technology-driven monitoring will contribute to a safer city and promote responsible public behaviour.

Traffic problem

Thanks for highlighting the problem of frequent traffic snarls in front of the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital in Tiruchi. The problem is perennial one. Share autorickshaws and city buses abruptly halt in front of the hospital entrances. This unauthorised halts virtually block traffic. The bus halt in front of the Mathuram Hospital can be dispensed with. Traffic constables should also be posted here.

Risk to road users

The poor condition of the recently laid road opposite Valangaiman Mariyamman Temple, is posing a risk to motorists. This is a busy area on the Kumbakonam-Mannargudi route. The road is recently laid but is in extremely bad condition with potholes, making it unsafe for all vehicles, including two-wheelers.
