Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Speaker M. Appavu said the Tirunelveli district administration was prepared to tackle heavy rain situation.

He told presspersons here on Monday that Tirunelveli, Tenkasi, and Thoothukudi districts had been experiencing widespread rainfall for the past two days. The district administration had been taking measures to ensure that nobody was affected by the floods. Several areas in Tirunelveli district were vulnerable to damage during disasters, with seven locations identified as very highly prone, 24 locations as highly prone and 38 locations classified as moderately prone.

As part of the preparedness, 231 places, including colleges, community welfare centres, and marriage halls have been kept ready to accommodate people if needed, the Speaker said.

District Collector R. Sukumar said a 26-member State Disaster Response Force had reached Tirunelveli to assist in potential emergency situations. In addition, a 28-member National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was also on standby.
