Laudable initiative

The proposal to specify Puthalam and Swamithoppu salt pans as mudflat conservation reserve is a laudable initiative by the forest department prompted by increasing numbers of migratory birds in Kanniyakumari district. Upgrading these crucial ecosystems to mudflat conservation reserve is an essential strategy to protect valuable feeding spots and wintering habitats at an important stopover for winged visitors.

Exhorbitant fares

The auto-rickshaw drivers are demanding exorbitant fare from Tirunelveli junction railway station compared to the fares of pre-booked vehicles for the same location. They justify the high price by pointing to the rainy night. There were days when information boards displayed auto fares to destinations such as Shanti Nagar, NGO colony etc,. in front of the railway junction and other bus terminus in Palayamkottai and Tirunelveli authorised by traffic police officials. Displaying such boards at vantage points in agreement with hiring vehicle drivers would make the travel easier for people coming from various locations.

Rain havoc

In the recent rain, open plots and grounds in Saibaba colony were completely waterlogged due to the absence of a proper drainage system. A visit to other areas, including Perumal Puram, NGO colony and Melappalayam, also revealed poor preparedness. The new bus stand, too, was flooded with knee-deep water. Instead of merely pointing out the authorities’ lack of preparedness, it is urged that anti-malaria TDT sprinkling be carried out immediately. Additionally unrepaired and pothole filled roads also posing safety hazard for motorists. The authorities concerned are requested to do the needful to address these issues.

Drain needed

In Agasteeswaram, the central street is flooded to a depth of two metres. The town has more than 1,000 houses and even the footpath of the government primary school in Agasteeswaram is also flooded with rainwater. The town panchayat authorities must take necessary action and implement measures to construct storm water drains in the area.
