Reckless driving by private buses

It is saddening to note the fatalities and number of injured persons in the recent head-on-collision involving two private buses near Kadayanallur. It is believed that speeding and reckless driving caused the accident. In southern districts especially-Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi, it is common to witness private buses operating without any restriction on speed, in an attempt to pick-up passengers who prefer faster travel to reach their destinations quickly.

It also reflects the slackness of traffic authorities, failing to take action on rash driving vehicles on the road. More CCTV cameras should be installed on the highway to monitor and warn vehicles crossing speeding limits and heavy penalties should be imposed on violators to reduce this growing menace.

Road maintenance

Referring to the article “Substandard roads in southern districts fail rain test,” published in The Hindu, the typical lifespan of asphalt road is about 15 years with minimal maintenance, provided it is constructed according to Indian Standards specifications. One essential maintenance measure is crack sealing, which helps water from entering the road and extends its lifespan.

The relevant agencies must revisit the tender process and insist on high quality construction and warranty period for asphalt roads.

Stray dog menace

Stray dog menace has become an escalating problem at Thaai Nagar in Melapalayam. The population of these dogs increased rapidly, leading to a significant deterioration of safety and peace within the area. The packs pose a serious threat, particularly to elderly citizens and children. Furthermore, the residents are also facing property damage, including instances of harm to parked vehicles. The continuous nuisance caused by their aggressive barking and howling is severely impacting the essential sleep hours.

The corporation authorities must implement immediate measures to control the stray dog population in the area.

Drinking water project chaos

Eruvadi, a special grade town panchayat, is one of the beneficiaries of Tamirabarani combined drinking water project, along with other villages in Nanguneri and Radhapuram regions. However, the residents were not informed about the modus operandi for executing the project in a ward wise manner. Out of the blue, the earth movers and labourers are in the streets and started working on things such as removal of paver blocks and digging of roads. The authorities must have informed the residents in advance, about the execution process and the necessary documents required for obtaining water connections.

At present, the streets are uneven and the movement and both vehicles are pedestrians are affected due to the ongoing work. The town panchayat is requested to address these issues with the support of the residents to ensure the successful completion of the project for the benefit of the public.

Protect water bodies

Kanniyakumari district is known for several large bodies of fresh water lakes, each with unique characteristics. They also support the local economy through tourism and fishing. However, many of them are now choked with water hyacinths and water lilies, which are rapidly spreading and covering the lakes.

Although few individuals may benefit through cultivation of lotus and water lilies and their leaves, using these lakes for irrigation purposes and fish farming can be a sustainable solution for maintenance of these lakes. Mismanagement of these water bodies can lead to water scarcity, pollution and habitat destruction. The district administration is requested to have regular monitoring to save these lakes.

Bus route extension

The Parvathipuram circular bus, which operates to important destinations within Nagercoil is an important source of public transport commuting within the town. Extending its route, by including town railway station and Nagercoil junction railway station would provide additional transport options for railway passengers.
