The Tiruppur City Corporation has started imposing hefty fines on bulk waste generators for violating the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) specified for disposal at a recent meeting.

The local body authorities had instructed the representatives of residential complexes, eateries, marriage halls, cinemas, educational institutions, private hospitals and other bulk waste generators that discarding waste in the open will no longer be permitted, and that they will be fined for doing so.

In one such instance, the City Corporation imposed fine of ₹25,000 on a builder for discarding construction debris in the open. A number of bulk waste generators have been fined in recent days, Corporation sources said.

On Tuesday, the civic authorities conducted a meeting with meat stall operators to orient them on the SOP and the system of hefty fines.

The crackdown by the City Corporation comes in the wake of stiff opposition from residents in the rural parts, including Mudhalipalayam and Iduvai where the Corporation had previously dumped garbage in abandoned quarries.

Sanitary Inspectors have been instructed to impose fines strictly on violators, Corporation Commissioner M.P. Amith said.
