The Tiruvallur District Police have busted a major ganja supply chain by arresting two persons involved in smuggling large quantities of ganja into Tamil Nadu from other States.

The police said it had come to their notice that a few individuals, originally from Tamil Nadu, who worked in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, had been assisting persons from Tamil Nadu and Kerala procure ganja by acting as intermediaries between cultivators/suppliers and inter-State buyers.

Acting on a tip-off, the police on Sunday caught Y. Rajan, 40 of Kurichi in Coimbatore and Sidhish Kora, 34 of Padua Koraput in Odisha. They were in possession of 25.3 kg of ganja. The investigation revealed that they procured the ganja from Odisha and transported it to Tamil Nadu frequently.

The police said Rajan had befriended a few other State workers in Coimbatore, through whom he gained contacts in Odisha. Initially, he used to travel to Odisha to purchase ganja and supplied it in Tamil Nadu. During one such instance, he was arrested and remanded in Visakhapatnam. He became acquainted with more suppliers during his imprisonment. Later, he settled permanently in Koraput district in Odisha and started acting as an intermediary for drug peddlers in Tamil Nadu whenever they visited Odisha, the police said.

Vivekananda Shukla, Superintendent of Police, Tiruvallur, said: “This operation has resulted in the disruption of a major supply chain of ganja, which was operating between the States of Odisha and Tamil Nadu. Investigation is in progress to identify and arrest others involved in this inter-State narcotics trafficking network.”
