Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) president K. Selvaperunthagai on Monday (November 10, 2025) urged the Congress cadre to participate in the DMK-led INDIA bloc’s State-wide protest against the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls on Tuesday (November 12). He will take part in the protest at Saidapet in Chennai.
In a statement, Mr. Selvaperunthagai said it was important to organise the protest though the Congress had filed a petition in the Supreme Court along with the DMK. He charged that the ECI has lost its independence and integrity.
“In the case filed by the DMK in the Supreme Court opposing the so-called SIR of the voter list, the TNCC has joined in and argued the exercise could endanger people’s right to vote and their citizenship. For free and fair elections to take place, the process of this revision must be carried out transparently and without any irregularities,” he said.
Mr. Selvaperunthagai added that the ECI must provide the legal basis for the SIR and it was “completely unacceptable” for it to introduce procedures that contradict the Representation of the People Act.
“In Tamil Nadu, although the officials involved in this work are State government employees, they are currently functioning under the control of the ECI. Therefore, just as the BJP came to power in other States through voter manipulation aided by the Commission, there is a possibility that the BJP could collude with the ECI to attempt similar electoral malpractices in Tamil Nadu,” he alleged.
