NAGAPATTINAM
World Fisheries Day was observed by Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University (TNJFU) at Vizhundamavadi village in Nagapattinam district on November 21, with a programme aimed at sensitising local fish farmers to improved aquaculture practices.
The event was inaugurated by TNJFU Vice-Chancellor N. Felix, who addressed fish farmers on the opportunities in freshwater aquaculture. In his keynote, he outlined simple, farmer-friendly technologies capable of generating higher returns, and stressed the importance of adopting modern, sustainable methods.
As part of the programme, 1,000 fingerlings of Indian major carps — catla, rohu and mrigal — were stocked in local farm ponds. The initiative drew strong interest from village-level fish growers.
A key highlight of the day was the harvest demonstration conducted under a seven-month impact study project implemented through the University’s Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK). Gift tilapia (weighing about 900 g) and koduva (barramundi, around 750 g), which had been stocked earlier in ponds at Vizhundamavadi village, were harvested in the presence of the Vice-Chancellor and made available for sale to residents and local traders.
More than 50 farmers participated in the programme. A. Gopalakannan, Director of Extension Education, TNJFU, Nagapattinam, and V. Senthilkumar, Project Coordinator, KVK, spoke.
