The Tamil Nadu Papers Limited (TNPL), Karur, has trained 50 farmers in Coimbatore district to cultivate pulpwood trees, for the purpose of enlisting them for contract farming in the first phase.

At a recent programme coordinated by the Business Division of Palamalai Farmer Producer Company, experts from TNPL and Forest College and Research Institute (FC & RI), Mettupalayam, affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), explained the specifics of raising casuarina and ‘malai vembu’ (Melia Dubia) that are ideal for the agro-climatic condition in Coimbatore.

The participants were also taken on a visit to a pulpwood plantation farm in Tiruppur district.

The TNPL, the trainers said, takes forward its Captive and Farm Plantation scheme by stationing grass root level plantation professionals in every cluster consisting of 10 to 15 potential villages to cater the livelihood need of marginalised farmers.

The plantation schemes implemented in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on 2,82,321 acres benefits over 58,077 farmers. While 2,60,852 acres encompass Farm Plantation, the remaining 21,469 account for Captive Plantation, according to TNPL data.

The TNPL has research linkage with two Coimbatore-based institutions: FC & RI in Mettupalayam, and Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding (IFGTB), Coimbatore under ICFRE (Indian Council of Forestry Research and Education), for the development of hybrids and new varieties.
