Members of the Manithaneya Varthagargal Nala Sangam submitted a petition to the District Collector on Monday, urging to notify the commercial stretches near Main Guard Gate as vending zones to safeguard the livelihood of roadside vendors.
Association district unit president A. Kabir Ahmed said in the petition that the Tiruchi Corporation’s plan to shift the roadside vendors from busy commercial areas to designated vending zones could scuttle their livelihood. Over 500 roadside vendors and hawkers have been operating for years along NSB Road, Teppakulam, Vannarapettai, Chatiram Bus Stand, West Bolevard Road, Singarathope, Big Bazaar Street, and surrounding areas.
He appealed to authorities to consider allotting shops at Yanaikulam Grounds as an alternative and allow the vendors to continue trading at their current locations until a proper space is provided.
