The Transport department is harnessing social media to reach out to children and instil traffic awareness from a tender age as part of shaping them into responsible citizens.
Titled ‘Catch Them Young’, the project envisages creating animation videos, reels, and a learner’s management system (LMS) to impart road safety awareness to children. LMS is a software platform that helps authorities to deliver online content.
To strengthen road safety through awareness, enforcement, engineering, environment, and emergency care, the Motor Vehicles department (MVD) proposes to conduct a road safety awareness programme. The project to be implemented with the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) is part of the awareness programme. The KSUM has been requested to identify suitable animation start-ups for producing the required animation content and LMS.
Speaking to The Hindu, Transport Commissioner C.H. Nagaraju said basically this was a project meant for students and the videos would be created targeting schoolchildren. As part of the project, road safety videos on various aspects would be made and circulated across social media platforms. Also, these videos and reels would be screened in schools when MVD officers visited them for taking road safety classes, he said.
Officials said instilling road safety awareness at a young age played a major role in empowering students with essential knowledge on road safety and helped them to become responsible citizens. SRV IT Hub will produce the animation content based on various themes and an LMS for the project.
The Kerala High Court recently directed the MVD to stringently enforce road safety rules in the wake of rise in accidents. This year, over 800 deaths of pedestrians had been reported until now.
