Amid a gas supply crisis, the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL) is enhancing capacity by constructing an additional 120 MW facility at the Rukhia Power Plant in Sonamura, Sepahijala district. Tripura’s Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath announced on Monday (November 10, 2025) that the foundation stone for this unit will be laid on November 26. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Mr. Nath are expected to attend.

The new 120 MW facility will utilise combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) technology.

The Rukhia Power Plant’s capacity has varied. Operations were halted in 2022-23 due to environmental clearance issues, which were unresolved. Officials said Power Minister Nath intervened personally in New Delhi to address the clearance, allowing the plant to produce only 19 MW at present.

The new power facility will cost approximately ₹1,119 crore.

Minister Nath highlighted the intangible nature of gas as a resource and mentioned that its availability is decreasing, which is prompting a shift towards solar energy development.
