The Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation (TTDC) plans to upgrade the star classification of Hotel Tamil Nadu-Unit II, previously SRM Hotel, on the Race Course Road in Tiruchi.
According to industry sources, hotels are classified into seven star categories. Depending on the facilities, the Ministry of Tourism of the Union government classifies the hotels with stars. While the hotels with basic amenities are given one star and two stars, hotels with luxurious facilities, spacious rooms, large public utility area, spas and bars get five stars. The hotels that meet the five star standards and boast super luxurious facilities are given the five-star deluxe category. Similarly, the heritage hotels are classified as heritage (basic). Upon submitting applications, the competent officials of the Ministry of Tourism would visit the facilities to provide star category.
The TTDC took control of SRM Hotel a few days ago following the expiry of a land lease agreement with the State government. The hotel was classified as a 4-star category. However, according to sources, the previous hotel management failed to renew the star category certificate. The TTDC, which brought the SRM Hotel under its control recently, has decided to apply for the upgrade of the star category of it.
R. Venkatesan, Assistant Commercial Manager, TTDC, told The Hindu that it would soon apply for the 5-star category for the hotel with the Union Ministry of Tourism. All necessary infrastructure, facilities, and services would be upgraded. All necessary documents would be collected from various agencies. All licences and records pertaining to the hotel were needed to be renewed or changed. The records with the various departments and the Tiruchi Corporation had to be changed.
Similarly, the bar licence would have to be transferred to the TTDC. The name of the power connection needed to be changed. The TTDC officials had been asked to carry out the tasks of bringing all records under the TTDC. Once the completion of all necessary tasks and the creation of some new additional facilities, the TTDC would begin the process of upgrading the star category. Five star status would attract international guests to the hotel, Mr. Venkatesan said.
