The Additional Sessions Court, Taliparamba, has found two Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) workers, including a local body poll candidate, guilty in the bomb attack on a police vehicle at Payyanur. The court will pronounce the sentence on Tuesday.

The court convicted V.K. Nishad, 35, and T.C.V. Nandakumar, 31, for throwing a bomb at a police team on August 1, 2012. A. Mithun, 36, and K.V. Kripesh, 38, the co-accused, were acquitted in the case.

The attack took place during State-wide protests following the arrest of then CPI(M) district secretary P. Jayarajan in the Ariyil Shukoor murder case.

According to the prosecution, the police team was returning after gathering information on an alleged assault on Youth Congress leader R. Rupesh when the accused arrived on two motorbikes and hurled a bomb at the vehicle.

Nishad, the first accused, is the LDF candidate in the Vellur-Mottamal ward of Payannur municipality.
