Two elderly persons lose over ₹17 lakh to cyber fraud

In separate cases case of cyber fraud, two senior citizens from Mangaluru city have lost over ₹17 lakh.

A 63-year-old person lost ₹13.92 lakh in an online investment fraud. In the complaint, the victim said soon after he clicked on the link under a video showing conversation of Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and MP Sudha Murthy on Facebook, he got a message asking him to invest in online trading.

He received call from one Nandini Tyagi wherein the caller said about profits for online investments. The complainant then received another call, who claimed to be a financial expert. On his advice, the complainant transferred a total of ₹13.92 lakh to different bank accounts between August 28 and October 22. When he asked for return on investments, fraudsters refused, which forced him to file the complaint.

The complainant filed the complaint by calling 1930 Cyber Crime Helpline. The complaint was referred to the Barke Police Station, which registered it for offences under provisions of IT Act.

Another case: APK file

A 74-year old retired employee lost ₹3.83 lakh from two different bank accounts after he downloaded an APK file sent by a fraudster.

In the complaint, the victim said he went on Google to search for service centre for washing machine and found a contact number. He received an APK file through Whatsapp from that number, which he downloaded. Gradually a total ₹2.35 lakh was deducted from his Union Bank account and ₹1.48 lakh got deducted from his Canara Bank account.

The Mangaluru Rural police have registered the compliant.
