Two men fell into a 60-feet abandoned well near Sultanpet in Sulur block of Coimbatore district, after they were chased by a group of people for allegedly stalking a 17-year-old girl, late on Thursday.

The Fire and Rescue Services rescued the two men — M. Suresh (25) and K. Saran (22) of Devarkulam in Tirunelveli district — who stalked the girl under the influence of alcohol, and arrested them on Friday.

The police said the incident took place around 6.30 p.m. when the girl from Malai Manthiripalayam was heading to her village after work on a moped.

The two men, who work in a mushroom farm at Jallipatti, followed the girl on a two-wheeler. As she entered her village, some people noticed the duo following her. The girl also told villagers that the men were stalking her.

A group of villagers attempted to secure the men, following which they sped away on their two-wheeler. The villagers chased them and they fell into an abandoned well that had water. The men held on to bushes grown on the wall of the well.

A seven-member team headed by Station Officer M. Balasubramanian from Sulur fire station rushed to the spot around 7.45 p.m. and rescued the two men, who did not suffer injuries. The Sultanpet police shifted them to the station immediately.

They were produced before a court and were remanded in judicial custody till December 19.
