Kannagi Nagar Police have launched a search for two men who allegedly hurled explosive substances at a ward councillor’s office in Kannagi Nagar on Monday evening. No injuries were reported, police said.

The office belongs to the councillor of Ward 196 of the Greater Chennai Corporation. The Ward Councillor K. Ashwini Karuna represents AIADMK and her father Karuna is ward secretary of the party. Preliminary investigations revealed that the councillor’s father, who frequently visited the office, would often give money to youngsters from the locality, police said.

Around 4 p.m. on Monday, as a funeral procession was passing through the area, two men from the procession reportedly entered the office looking for the councillor’s father to ask for money. When they did not find him there, the duo allegedly hurled firecrackers inside the office before fleeing the spot, police added.

A case has been registered, and efforts are on to trace and identify the two suspects.
