Two workers from the district have been abducted by unidentified armed men even as they were working in a power transmission project in the West African country of Mali.

According to Praveena, wife of Esakki Raja, 36, of Muthukrishnapuram near Kadayanallur, her husband and one of the hostages, who had gone to Mali eight months ago with the guidance of his relative, was working in a power transmission company implementing the project at Kobri in Mali. When he was working along with M. Thalapathi Suresh, 26, of Kanmanipuram under Puthukkudi panchayat near Kadayanallur in a project, they were abducted along with three others by an armed group on Saturday.

“The abductors are holding the workers as hostages. Hence, the Tamil Nadu Government, through the Union Government, should take immediate steps to ensure the early and safe release of Mr. Esakki Raja and Mr. Suresh,” said Ms. Praveena.

Following conflict between the armed groups of Mali, including a group enjoying al-Qaeda’s support, fuel supply to major cities of the country remains hit. Hence, the government is working on ensuring power supply to the affected areas by involving foreign workers, who are often abducted by the warring armed groups.

Following this abduction, other Indian workers in this project at Kobri have been moved to Bamako, Mali’s capital.
