The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) on Friday accused the office staff of Thiruvananthapuram Mayor Arya Rajendran of being involved in the removal of the name of Vyshna Suresh, its candidate in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation, from the voters’ list. A video of their alleged involvement shows two officials collecting a written affidavit from the resident of a house that they have been staying there for two years, although Ms. Suresh had noted it as her own residential address.

The Mayor’s office has not responded officially to the allegations. However, Corporation sources say that there was no illegality as the Revenue Inspector of the ward and an office assistant had gone to assess the claims made by the candidate. The video also shows that another family was staying in the address earlier claimed by the candidate. The candidate’s name was removed on November 13, while the visit showed in the video took place on November 18, to assess the revised address claimed by the candidate, said the source.

The State Election Commission, which two days ago ordered the reinstating of Ms. Suresh’s name had noted that the petitioner’s EPIC card, driving licence, Aadhaar card, passport, and bank passbook all mentioned her as a resident of TC No. 3/564, Sudha Bhavan, PRA 65, Muttada, as she had failed to update the house number, which had since been changed to 18/2365.
