A major controversy has erupted in Shiriya under the Mangalpandy panchayat after the United Democratic Front (UDF) lodged a complaint alleging that Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] local committee member Mohammad Iqbal had failed to disclose details of criminal cases, including a pending warrant, against him in his nomination papers. The complaint was submitted to the returning officer by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) councillor and UDF candidate Abubacker Siddiqui.
According to the complaint, Iqbal, who is contesting as a Left Democratic Front (LDF)-backed Independent candidate, failed to disclose details of criminal cases against him in violation of election rules.
The IUML said complaints had been submitted to the district election officer and the State Election Commission on the issue.
