The Udupi’s Kaup police seized two sand-filled lorries near Muttu Cross checkpost on Saturday.

At 4.45 p.m, a team of the Kaup police stopped a lorry filled with sand worth ₹5,000. The driver told the police that there was no permit to transport the sand. The sand had been extracted from Chakshuspati stream in Alevoor village.

The same day, around 7 p.m., the police stopped another lorry, which was also filled with sand worth ₹5,000. The police said the sand was being taken in the lorry belonging to one Hammar and it was going from Uliyargoli to Kotalakatte in Kaup taluk. The driver produced a document that showed that the sand was permitted for transport in the vehicle between 1.36 p.m. and 2.36 p.m. on November 7. The police said the same permit has been used for making multiple trips of movement of sand extracted from Chakshuspati stream.

In both cases, the Kaup police booked the owner of the vehicle under Section 303 (2) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Sections 4, 4(1A) and 21 of Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act.
