The underpass of the old flyover at Uppilipalayam in Coimbatore is witnessing traffic snarls during peak hours, often spilling over to Brooke Bond Road (Dr Krishnasamy Mudaliyar Road) and Avinashi Road.
The congestion is caused mainly when mini goods carriers and long vehicles from Avinashi Road take a right turn at the intersection of the underpass to Brooke Bond Road and vehicles from Brooke Bond Road take a right turn to proceed to Marakkadai and Goods Shed Road.
A traffic police officer said that regulating the traffic at the intersection of the underpass was a challenging task, considering the narrow space available.
According to the officer, the narrow underpass is ideal for two-wheelers and cars. However, mini good carriers also use the underpass and cause congestion as they have larger turning radius. The congestion becomes severe when traffic police personnel are not posted at the location.
A regular commuter, who takes the underpass from Brooke Bond Road to reach Avinashi Road, said police personnel are not being posted on a regular basis to regulate the traffic during peak hours.
S. Ashok Kumar, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, said the city police have placed height barriers to prevent entry of tall and large vehicles to the underpass. However, those barriers are damaged by vehicles over a period.
He said the police have requested the Railways to erect additional heavy-duty barriers to prevent such vehicles from entering the underpass. He also added that traffic police personnel will handle the congestion at the underpass during peak hours.
