Manipal Hospital, Old Airport Road, Bengaluru, Spine Care consultant Dr. Balamurugan T. on Thursday highlighted the importance of using robotics in managing lower back pain and other spinal conditions.
Addressing a press conference in Anantapur, he said, “The flexibility and dexterity of robotic systems help in enhancing precision and making smaller incisions. Since robotic procedures are minimally invasive, patients experience lesser pain and blood loss both during and after surgery. This accelerates rehabilitation and significantly reduced postoperative discomfort, helping patients recover faster and return to their normal lives sooner.”
With continued innovation, cutting-edge technologies such as robotic-assisted procedures are transforming the future of spine surgery, making it safer, more precise, and less invasive, he said. The integration of robotics, AI, and advanced imaging is paving the way for a new era in spinal care, ultimately improving the quality of life for patients worldwide.
Doctors said spinal disorders are a growing health concern worldwide, affecting people across different age groups. The most common issue is lower back pain which impacts 60% of men and 80% of women, particularly those who are over 50 years.
The most common risk factors for spinal disorders include a sedentary lifestyle, a history of pregnancy, being overweight, and occupational factors. Manual labourers, especially those working in fields, are more likely to be affected due to repetitive strain on their spinal discs.
