Director and writer V. Sekar, whose comedy films portrayed middle and lower-middle class lives and aspirations in Tamil cinema, passed away in Chennai on Friday after a brief illness. He was 72.
Mr. Sekar was well-known for capturing the mundane lives of working class and middle-income families in a remarkable manner, casually using comedy to bring progressive ideas into his films.
Mr. Sekar’s films were also self-reflective, often highlighting how men tend to exploit women, even within so-called progressive settings.
Some of his most well-known films are Varavu Ettana Selavu Pathana, starring Nasser, Vadivelu, and Radhika; and Kaalam Maari Pochu – both superhit family dramas.
His other notable works are Naan Pudicha Maapillai, Porantha Veeda Puguntha Veeda, Naan Petha Magane, Viralukketha Veekkam, and Koodi Vazhnthal Kodi Nanmai.
